Diving in Tukang Besi Island - Wakatobi (Picture Courtessy Tukang Besi Island)

Sulawesi is one of the Indonesian islands which is surrounded by the most coral reefs.Tukang Besi Island is the second largest national marine park in Indonesia.

Manado in the North is the famous dive location in Sulawesi, but the Tukang Besi islands in the south also called Wakatobi National Marine park, are just as beautiful. To reach these islands will take you 24 hours traveling from Makassar. That is why you are still one of the few divers in this area.

Island Garden Resort

The Island Resort is located on the small island of Hoga in the middle of the 'Wakatobi Marine National Park', part of the 'Tukang Besi Islands' in South-East Sulawesi.

The resort has 4 bungalows with 2 rooms each, a nice bungalow with bamboo chairs and tables, and a small bungalow directly at the sea. From the beach, you can see the jungle-covered hills of the next island, the boat peoples' village, small fisherboats, and fishermen planting agar-agar under water.

The 'Wakatobi Marine National Park' is ideal for snorkeling and diving. The island is surrounded by coral reef, plenty of fish can be seen.

Hoga Island is just 2 km long. There is no electricity and no road on the whole island. Boats are the only transport. A 20 minute boat trip gets you to the Island of 'Kaledupa', with a village and the chance of shopping. You can also rent boat for longer trips if you like.

Wakatobi Marine National Park

The Wakatobi is a Marine National Park comprising an archipelago of four large islands located in south east Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Wakatobi, at 1.39 million hectares is the second largest marine protected area in Indonesia. The park encompasses stunning coral reefs, white sand beaches and an amazing wealth of whales and dolphins. Positioned at the heart of the Indo Pacific area where marine biodiversity is at its greatest, diving is truly fantastic.

Over 90,000 people live within the national park, many of whom rely on the reefs and inter-tidal habitats for their livelihoods. These peoples include many interesting cultures and histories. The objective of the marine park management is to balance the needs of the local communities whilst protecting biodiversity.
